Do You Know These Valuable Tips to Save More Money?

Many people earn wages just enough to supply their basic necessities. But if you truly want to be financially secured, you have to acquire more money than what you’re spending - money that you can invest in a business or in other ventures that can propel you to financial freedom. To be able to do this, you have to start saving early in life.

Here are some pointers regarding saving money:

1. Set a minimum amount to be saved. Savings are not meant to cover bill payments should one fall short of cash. They are intended for financial security. A little savings, in time, will become big; and it can be used as investment capital to earn more. Question: “Where will I get the cash I need should I fall short of it?” The answer: “Find other means of earning extra income, say a weekend part-time job. Any excess cash from one’s part-time job can be added to your savings.

2. Shop only for items needed, not for products that you wanted to buy on impulse. Think first before you purchase. Don’t fall prey to bargains not needed. It is not suggested that one should starve or be in a pitiful state. As a matter of fact, one can reward himself/herself once in a while for accomplishments made.

3. Review one’s lifestyle. Change or scale down habits that seem to be not-so-wise spending. For instance, frequent eating in restaurants which is more expensive than homemade cooking can be lessened. Taking the bus or train when possible, instead of driving one’s own car, can save on gas and parking fees. If one have to drive his/her car, try car pooling with officemates or neighbors; thereby sharing on expenses.

4. Check your regular monthly bills on utilities like electricity, gas, water, telephone and ask oneself: “Where can I save?”

It may take a while to get adjusted to a lifestyle in the “savings” mode, even to the point of “little sacrifices.” Adapt a gradual, progressive change to save to lessen the impact of adjustment from the lifestyle one used to be accustomed to.

There are more ways of starting the path to a financially secured life by making use of one’s creativity.

Remember, little things mean a lot.

Famous motivational speaker, Charlie Tremendous Jones, frequently
tells us that five years from now, we’ll be the same people we are
today except for the people we meet and the books we read.

Here are some quotes from Tremendous Jones’ “Life Changing Classics,
Vol III - Books are Tremendous.”

“The reading of good books is one of the most helpful ways in which
young people can develop themselves. One of the saddest mistakes I
made in years gone by was utter neglect of reading. I realize now
what I have missed by not having read and studied more.” department
store guru JC Penney

“A classic is something that everybody wants to have read and nobody
wants to read.” classic 19th century American author Mark Twain

“A good book is the precious life-blood of a master spirit, embalmed
and treasured up on purpose to a life beyond life.” classic poet John Milton.

“Some books leave us free and some books make us free.” 19th century
American writer Ralph Waldo Emerson.

“A man who buys a book is not just buying a few ounces of paper, glue
and printer’s ink; he may be buying a whole new life.” Ralph Waldo Emerson.

“If a man can purchase but very few books, my first advice to him would be,
let him purchase the very best. If he cannot spend much, let him spend well.
The best will always be the cheapest.” American author and theologian Charles H. Spurgeon

“The average salesman doesn’t read a book a year. That’s why he is the average
salesman.” Anonymous

So, what’s the moral of the story? If you are not reading several books a year, you’re missing out on a rich part of your life. Grab a book off the shelf and get started. A few minutes a day will shoot you through a book so fast you’ll wonder why you procrastinated.

Why Costa Rica?

Someone recently asked me why anyone of sane mind would want to move to a third world country such as Costa Rica and actually plan to live there. I would like to share, and to document, the reasons for this to my fellow American citizens who may someday decide to pick up their roots and do the same.

One of the primary reasons Costa Rica was selected is because of the multitude of climates that you can select to live in. If you want to live by the ocean and the great beaches of Costa Rica where it is hot and the humidity is high, the Caribbean coast is the ideal location for you.
If you desire to live near the ocean and more great beaches where it is hot but the humidity is significantly lower, then the upper Pacific coast is the place for you. If you like it better in the temperate zone between 65 and 75 degrees, the western central valley is beckoning to you. Drive 20 km north in the central valley and you may need a sweater by day and two blankets by night. The coastal areas are the only places where you may need air conditioning and then only occasionally. There are cooling breezes throughout the country.

Another major reason is the lower cost of living. Utilities such as electric, water, and phone rates are drastically reduced. Food costs are extremely low with most restaurant meals so inexpensive that dining out may cost only a few U.S. dollars. Housing in many parts of the country can be obtained for as little as $100.00 U.S. per month for an unfurnished home or apartment. The purchase of a three bedroom home in many locations can be found for $30,000 or less. There are many retirees who will vouch that they live very comfortably on a retirement income of less than $20,000 U.S.
The Costa Rican people are found to be a gentle, non-violent, and considerate people. They believe in family and traditional social mores that many times appear to be lost in other countries. Costa Rica itself is a democratic country, does not have a standing Army, and relies on its police force to maintain law and order which they do very well.

Violent crime is almost unheard of in Costa Rica. There are occasional break-ins of vehicles, some purse snatchings, but these are not of the violent nature where firearms are used and human life is in danger as in many other countries. These mostly occur in or around the larger cities. In the country and smaller towns they are almost unheard of. Costa Rica is one of the safest countries to vacation or to retire in that can be found.
Another very appealing fact to many is that foreign residents may purchase property in Costa Rica with many safeguards in place by the government. These may be used for vacation, investment, or retirement purposes. Property taxes are extremely low and there is a ready source of labor for domestic and other purposes in the country with maid and general labor costs of just over $1.00 U.S. per hour. Homes can be constructed by master builders for one fourth to one fifth the cost of a similar home in the U.S.
I have not as yet mentioned the breathtaking scenery of the mountains, rainforests, wildlife, birds, waterfalls, fishing, sailing, boating, and the many wonderful tours that can be taken from the many good tour operators in Costa Rica which are outstanding.

I am sure that given the proper time, I could climb out of my hammock here on the terrace where a cool breeze is blowing, put down my drink, and think of many other reasons why someone would choose to live in the wonderful third world country of Costa rica. However, at this time I have overtaxed myself in my accounts of these wonders. As we say in Costa Rica, “if it does not get accomplished today, there is always manana”. I hope I have answered some of the more basic questions of why anyone would move to Costa Rica. If you ever get tired of where you are living, and want to vacation or retire to the wonderful country of Costa Rica, there is always room for you in our beautiful adopted country. Pura Vida everyone.

Happy Birthday To The Income Tax!

Did you know the federal income tax celebrated its 92nd birthday on October 3rd?

In February of 1913 the 16th Amendment was ratified by the required two-thirds of the states. The amendment gave Congress the power to “lay and collect tax on incomes, from whatever sources derived, without apportionment among the several states, and without regard to any census or enumeration.” On October 3, 1913, Congress passed the Revenue Act of 1913, which created the first permanent federal income tax.

Congress has made two previous attempts at instituting a federal income tax. The first, in 1861, was an emergency measure to fund the Civil War, and was repealed in 1872. In 1894, in response to complaints that an excessive reliance on tariffs as a source of revenue caused the price of imported goods to rise, Congress again passed an income tax law, which the Supreme Court ruled unconstititional in 1895.

In celebration of this special occasion, here are some facts about the very first Form 1040:

* The tax applied to salaries and wages, interest, dividends, rents, royalties, pensions and annuities, income from estates, trusts, sole proprietorships and partnerships, and gains from the sale of most types of property.

* The salaries and wages of state and local government employees were exempt from income tax.

* Interest from federal, as well as state and local, government bonds were exempt from income tax.

* Deductions were allowed for “personal” interest, federal excise taxes, taxes paid to state and local governments, casualty and theft losses, bad debts, business expenses, and depreciation of property used in business.

* There was an exemption of $3,000.00 for single persons and $4,000.00 for married couples.

* A “normal” tax of 1% was applied to the first $20,000.00 of taxable income. Dividends were exempt from this “normal” tax. An additional or “super” tax of from 1% to 6% was applied to income, including dividends, in excess of $20,000.00.

* The return was due “on or before the first day of March”.

* There was only one page of instructions!

* In the first year of the income tax only 1 out of every 271 American citizens were taxed and $28 Million in revenue was raised.

Over the years the federal income tax has evolved into the complicated “mess” that it is today, with 54,000 pages of code. According to former Treasury Secretary Paul O’neill, “Our tax code is so complicated; we’ve made it nearly impossible for even the Internal Revenue Service to understand.” Here are some of the landmarks of this evolution:

* A personal exemption allowance for dependents and a deduction for charitable contributions were added in 1917.

* Capital gains were singled out for preferential treatment in 1922, although profits on the sale of certain types of property received special tax treatment as early as 1918.

* A deduction for medical expenses was introduced in 1942.

* The Standard Deduction was added in 1944 as an alternative to requiring taxpayers to itemize qualified expenses.

* An Income Averaging method of tax compution was initiated in 1964, to be taken away by the Tax Reform Act of 1986.

* A “minimum” tax on specified “tax preference” items first appeared in 1970, and was replaced by the dreaded Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) in 1979.

* An Individual Retirement Account for taxpayers not covered by an employer pension plan was introduced in 1974.

* The refundable Earned Income Credit for low wage earners with dependent children was created in 1975.

* Unemployment compensation was made partially taxable in 1979, and was eventually made fully taxable. I remember saying at the time, “The next thing you know they will be taxing Social Security!”

* Social Security and Railroad Retirement benefits became partially taxable in 1984.

By the way, if you think taxes are too high today, from the end of World War II through the early 1960s the top tax rate was more than 90%!

Restless Legs Syndrome or Growing Pains?

Restless legs syndrome is a common sleep disorder affecting about 1 in 10 adults. Characterized by an uncomfortable, and sometimes painful, itching or prickling in the legs and an uncontrollable desire to move the legs, restless legs syndrome is one of the most common causes of insomnia.

It is normally seen as a problem once you reach the age of about fifty and tends to get worse as you get older. It’s also the ‘poor relation’ of sleeping disorders and unlike insomnia, sleep apnea or narcolepsy, all of which are studied in medical school and reasonably well understood by doctors, restless legs syndrome is given relatively scant attention. One study even goes so far as to suggest that in as many as 3 out of 4 cases the condition goes undiagnosed, even when the patient presents with all the symptoms of the disorder.

This lack of focus on the problem, and general acceptance of it being a problem of the middle aged and elderly, perhaps hides the real extent of the problem and, in particular, masks the fact that restless legs syndrome may well play a major part in the lives of our children.

For many years now children have been complaining of symptoms at night which we have brushed off as simply growing pains. In addition, our children often appear unable to sit still for more than a couple of minutes and we simply put this down to normal childhood hyperactivity. The truth, however, is that a substantial number of our children are in fact suffering from restless legs syndrome.

The cause of restless legs syndrome remains something of a mystery although a good picture of the disorder is now beginning to appear and two elements of this picture should act as a wake up call to the medical profession.

The first element in the picture is that of a genetic basis for restless legs syndrome. It is now accepted that this condition runs in families with one study showing that as many of half of all cases show a family history. This is re-enforced by recent chromosome studies identifying a specific gene that is believed to play an important part in susceptibility to restless legs syndrome. Perhaps most significant of all however is a report published by the Mayo Clinic at the end of last year which showed that in a study of more than 500 children nearly three quarters of those with restless legs syndrome had a family history of the disorder.

The second element in the picture is that of an iron deficiency in sufferers. A number of studies by respected institutions, such as John Hopkins University, have shown that low levels of iron are common in cases of restless legs syndrome. It comes as no surprise therefore that more than eighty percent of the children in the Mayo Clinic study with restless legs syndrome also showed low iron levels.

So just what does all of this mean? Well, it’s simple. If your child is having trouble sleeping and complaining of discomfort at night, particularly in the legs, perhaps there is a little more to it that just growing pains. Similarly, if your child is constantly running around or jumping up and down then perhaps discomfort in the legs rather than hyperactivity is the cause.

Growing pains are normal in children, as are periods of excessive activity, and the odd night here and there is certainly nothing to worry about. But, if your child’s growing pains appear night after night then there’s a good possibility that these aren’t growing pains at all, but are the symptoms of restless legs syndrome.

Hurricane Launching of Super Sonic Missiles

It maybe possible to swarms of launch super sonic heavy missiles, which will create huge sonic booms and shock waves as they fly. Launching hundreds of these and weaving them against the Hurricane’s wind at low levels we maybe able to significantly disrupt the eye wall. If this is done during a re-formation near land it may prevent the huge damage normally associated with the strong winds of Hurricanes as the make Landfall.

There are such new missiles, which could accomplish this currently in development for the United States Navy. These fast terrain-hugging missiles are called skimmer missiles and they can fly low enough to duck under radars and fast enough to severely disrupt the Hurricanes surface wind allowing local and regional airflows to get into the mix and further dissipate the intense circular airflows.

This strategy may not work entirely in defeating a Hurricane, but it can disrupt airflows using basic laws of physics to slow the winds of the Hurricane and deform its eye wall which will save lives. The power of the storm will still remain, but it will merely be in a different form of energy than a tightly wrapped Hurricane. Hurricane Launching of Super Sonic Missiles or “Skimmer” missiles just now becoming online and available to the United States Navy, could be the answer to minimizing loss of life and wind damage during the most horrific Hurricanes. Think on this.

Network Marketing and Other Business Models

Before we move on to the definition of network marketing we must understand what are the ways one can make money. There are only three traditional ways you can make money. The fourth one is a relatively new concept of Network marketing.

1. The Work model

This is an age old concept. You work for another business owner and get paid. In this model you do much of the work but you get paid only a small amount which you were contracted for. You have no linkage to the profits you created for the business owner. You also get laid off the job if the business owner believes you are no more useful to his enterprise.

2. Traditional Business Model

Here you are the business owner. You require putting in a lifetime of work, investments and commitment to see good money. Your constant involvement in the business is a pre requisite. All profits are distributed to stakeholders like the financiers, stockholders, employees and whatever is left after taxes is yours to take home.

However the moment you retire, your business may no longer exist or it may not be that well managed bringing to naught your lifetimes of work.

3. Franchise Business Model

The franchisee buys a ready made business brand name and makes a copy of the original business model. Pays a large upfront fee and makes all the investment on infrastructure and stocks etc. He also makes a commitment to pay a certain percent of profits to the franchise owners every year. Though safer than creating a new business, franchise model offers very limited profits on a huge investment.

4. Network Marketing Model

Start anywhere. Even from your home. Even if you are homeless! The business grows organically. Income is distributed by the principal company to all distributors according to a multi level compensation formula that pays you for your sales as well as sales of others in your team down many levels and as wide as you can dream. You earn from your own efforts and efforts of others. As your team grows, your business grows and your income grows. You are not limited to any geographic area and can operate wherever company has a presence.

There is a long list of successful entrepreneurs including president of countries who have subscribed to this new model of business.

However a word of warning. If your knowledge about this form of business is not adequate, you are likely to fall victim to the unscrupulous elements in the business and likely to get ripped off big and land in debt. As in all business there are enough fly by night operators operating through your best friend or relative who are themselves an unknowing victim and may suck you in to the whirlpool of losses and failures.

Not Long Before We See Sleek And Light Gaming Laptops

Laptop computer shipments are estimated to be approaching 130million units this year, which is gigantic! In fact demand is so high that taiwanese manufactures are anticipating component shortages already. Many have predicted laptops to be trendy but its surprising that theres been no give. This is a trade that is searching to enchance on a number of things all in one go so new directions and excitement is created all the time.

More consumers are buying notebooks for gaming these days. Because of the increasing production and fast shifts it means expensive parts are lower in price than a couple of years ago. Gaming on notebooks is indeed a reality now with the breakthroughs in technology. Even more astonishing these days I think is how slick the cases are getting especially when you think about much speed is in them. Still there is a vast gap between the performance of notebooks and desktop pcs however desktop computers are more spacious to cater for improved cooling and airflow that all help. It looks as if everybody is possessed with designing thinner, lightweight notebooks and I’m sure we will see gaming notebooks like that in the near future.

Sometimes the standard mass market notebooks just are not suitable for what we require them for so custom laptops will forever be around. The benefit with a couple of custom notebooks is that you get good third party parts put in them. Defining what you require plainly is the main advantage. The systems found in retail outlets are typically configured based standard, mass market users and well not everybody is average now are they? You can get a more suitable notebook by buying it built to spec. You can a large number of manufacturers who supply direct so there are a lot of alternatives too. Big companies are in fact being ignored because of this.

I can’t wait to see what portables are introduced next. The super low cost umpc group looks to be starting all the buzz at the moment. This area is already facing tough competition and is becoming saturated. I think consumers would prefer to see larger notebooks that weigh a lot less than the current technology. Manufacturers must be laboring on a solution to this by now. I can expect its not too long before we start getting gaming notebooks that weigh nothing. Even though notebooks technology follows roadmaps there is forever going to be a gadget that changes all that.
