E-books are among the fastest growing segments of the publishing industry. As long as there are self-publishing authors, e-books will exist. So how can you profit from this trend?

You can produce beautiful e-book covers using any program which allows you to work with texts and graphics. The best programs for designing e-book covers, or any cover for that matter, are Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and QuarkXPress. If you have any of these programs, then you’re sitting on a potential goldmine.

If you don’t have the above mentioned software, all is not lost. Microsoft Word can also be used to design e-book covers. In fact, any word processor will do. You won’t have as many design options as with a more advanced graphics program, but to start, you should work with what you’ve got. You can also upgrade after you’ve had a few clients. There is also one other option.

There are programs designed specifically for creating e-book covers. Perhaps using one of these programs would be easier than learning a more complicated piece of software. Most e-book cover generators come with pre-built templates that can be edited to suit your needs.

However, it will be a trial and error process as there’s very little information available on the reliability of these e-book cover generating programs. If you go this route, try to find a program which allows a trial run. If you want clients to be pleased with your work, you have to be sure to create a professional looking cover. Here are some tips:

1. Ebook cover graphics must be unique. They must represent the book accurately, and also make use of proper colors. This leads us to tip number two.

2. Use color psychology. Certain colors make people feel different emotions. Some people find blue soothing, others may find that red makes them excited. The cover on the e-book should take into account how certain colors make people feel. It could play a strong factor in influencing people to purchase the book. It may be a good idea to further study color psychology before accepting your first design client.

3. Use professional quality cover photos. If the client can’t provide a good quality photograph, make use of some of the free images available via image websites. Be sure the pictures or graphics you use accurately represent the client’s book. In this case, the potential buyer will judge the book by its cover.

Make sure any cover you design looks professional, even if you’re new to the business. Your clients trust you to make them look good, and don’t care if you’re just learning the program. That’s why you should try a few sample designs before searching for clients. With enough practice, you’ll soon be good enough to earn a nice income from designing e-book covers.

Collecting music boxes such as carousel music boxes, music trinket boxes, children’s jewelry boxes, and many other mechanical instruments and movements is a hobby loved by many a music box and antique collector. However, there are certain things music boxes and antique collectors can do to ensure they are getting a valuable piece for their collection. Here are a few tips to help in this process.

1. Make sure you truly are purchasing a valuable music box. There are some vendors who inflate the value of the item and in general are just unscrupulous. To protect yourself, first took carefully at the box. If it looks like new, be cautious since, unfortunately, some restorers have just cleared away all the originality. If the music box is old and pricey, you can usually find out who has restored it, how good it was, as well as check out the restorer’s reputation.

2. If purchasing a fully restored music box, consider a preserved piece in an unrestored and original condition, as this will have much more value. In addition, the bells were cheap and had a high and untuned sound. So, these types of music boxes are best to avoid if seeking a box of value.

4. Look for music boxes with plain cases as an important point to consider since it is likely the date when it was manufactured was early. Another point to consider is the larger the movement relative to its case, the higher quality and value a music box has. While this may not be true in all cases, it is important to think about when assessing a music box’s value.

We all have a need for a container to hold our “stuff”. Whether it’s pens, scissors, paper clips, notes… you need something to hold it all. And you want it to be attractive and match your home decor.

Well this little bag is the perfect accessory for your desk or kitchen counter. Make it out of left over fabric from your curtains or seat cushions and you now have a decorative junk holder that harmonizes with your room!

Follow these easy step by step instructions to complete this simple sewing project.

You will need:

Sharp scissors
Fabric for the outside of the bag (17 3/8″ x 9″)
Fabric for the inside of the bag (17 3/8″ x 9 3/8″)
Thread to match your inside fabric
Straight edge ruler
Seam ripper
Instructions

Step 1. Cut both your fabrics to the dimensions listed in your supply list above

Step 2. Fold your outside fabric crosswise right sides together, aligning raw edges

Step 3. Sew along the side edge and bottom edge with a 3/8″ seam allowance. Backstitch at the beginning and end of your stitching.

Step 4. Fold your inside fabric crosswise right sides together, aligning raw edges

Step 5. Sew along the side edge and bottom edge with a 3/8″ seam allowance. Backstitch at the beginning and end of your stitching.

Step 6. Stitch about an inch of stitching and backstitching on both sides of 2″ on the bottom stitching line you just did in the step above.

Step 7. Remove the stitching in between the stitches made above with your seam ripper. You now have a 2″ hole in the bottom seam

Step 8. With your outside fabric, align the bottom seam with the side seam… keep the top raw edges aligned… and flatten the fabric. You will have a diamond shape. Do the same with the inside fabric.

Step 9. Measure down from the tip 1 5/8″ along the stitching lines and mark. Repeat for the other side. Do this for both fabrics.

Step 10. Sew across the tip at each mark made above. Make sure the seams are pressed open when you sew across them.

Step 11. Trim off the tips (optional)

Step 12. Turn the outside fabric bag right side out and insert it into the inside fabric bag (which is still wrong side out). Align the side seams and top raw edges. Pin around the top edge.

Step 13. Sew a 3/8″ seam around the top edge. Make sure the seams are pressed open when you sew across them.

Step 14. Pull the outside fabric bag through the 2″ hole of the inside fabric bag.

Step 15. Close up the hole by either hand whip-stitching it shut or stitching on top with a straight stitch. This is going to be on the inside of the bag, so it doesn’t have to be perfect.

Step 16. Tuck the inside fabric into the outside fabric bag.

Step 17. Pull on the inside fabric bag so that 1/4″ of the inside fabric show on the outside. Pin in place

Step 18. Stitch around the top edge of the bag close to the seam to hold the lining in place.

Step 19. Fold the top edge over.

You can also dress this bag up even more with sewing embroidery on the front of the bag or appliqueing a design. Consider using a decorative stitch along the top edge before folding it down. Or add fringe to the top edge. You would add the fringe in step 13.

There has been a recent development of online poker portals banning players from the U.S. state of Kentucky. That’s because an idiotic, simple minded Kentucky judge tried to eradicate internet gambling altogether by seizing 141 of the world’s largest domain names. The reason: In part to protect the state’s horse racing industry and state lottery. Now, as I have written before, this is not only something that would affect people who live in this state.

If this is allowed to happen, it would basically mean that every online gambling and poker site would have to be compliant with every local law everywhere across the whole world. This would, of course, pretty much kill online poker and online gambling in general. Now, it remains to be seen how legal this move by the dumb state of Kentucky is, as it will obviously be challenged legally.

Even poker legend Doyle “Texas Dolly” Brunson has weighed in on the subject and is joining the good fight. “I’m not going to go into all the legal issues, but Kentucky is in for a hell of a battle and every legal opinion I’ve heard says they don’t have a chance of winning,” he wrote on his blog. So, many sites are now in turn blocking residents of Kentucky from joining, which is unfortunate for these law abiding citizens who just want to play online poker, but live in a state with a Draconian government. Let’s hope the state of Kentucky loses this battle.

As a collector of antique Japanese netsuke, inro, lacquer boxes, as well as Chinese snuff bottles and Jade carvings (particularly pendants) like all other collectors I have always been looking out for the chance to buy a bargain!

Values

One has to be able to evaluate the value to be able to recognise a bargain. A comparative value as applied to skills of craftsmanship is something I use when considering buying. There are some limitations to this however. For example one could not value paintings this way, otherwise a few lines by Picasso would never justify being worth so much more than pictures with more intricate applications of paint. So artistic merit has to be another important factor.

It is necessary to appreciate that all prices are dictated only by the market place. If demand is great prices go up, if not, they go down. This applies to antiques in just the same way as to all other commodities. However having had many years’ experience as a collector I have never seen prices fall in our particular fields of interest as long as one bought good quality.

What has happened on the few occasions when I thought that prices had reached the highest point possible (in other words ridiculously high!) was that the following year such records were broken! Only the larger Jade carvings have not proved quite so successful, this is the only area of our collecting that has been affected by less demand, and really what seems to have happened is that prices have remained static for a long time.

Craftsmanship and fashion

There is an element of fashion in collecting, and at the moment, as has been the case for quite a long time now, small is beautiful! So the smaller items, like most of the antiques we collect, are in very big demand. There is more to it than that however; all the antiques we collect represent such amazing craftsmanship, the like of which is certainly never likely to be produced again. With so many keen collectors, now established all over the world, searching for the very limited supply of these fine pieces, I am convinced that this is unlikely to be subject to any change of fashion for a very long time. Although the larger Jade pieces do not sell so easily, there are certain exceptions: very valuable pieces that appeal to the Chinese taste do sell well in the Hong Kong sales, but the European market is rather poor. This is something that could suddenly change, and I believe it will, particularly as these larger carvings appear better and better value for money.

Bargain hunting

So many collectors begin with the view that they will only buy if they are satisfied that they have found a ‘bargain’. Whilst this was possible many years ago, when believe it or not, netsuke and snuff bottles were sold in lots, which consisted of six or more at a time, but those days have long gone by and today it is far more difficult.

However looking back, with the advantage of hindsight, over so many years of collecting I have come to realise that surprisingly, our very best bargains (we had a few) were not the ones we had thought of as good bargains - the real bargains have turned out to be more often than not, our most expensive purchases. These were the outstanding pieces, that we just had to have, even though at the time the prices often seemed quite outrageous.

I remember being worried about having paid too much, on several occasions, for quite a long time afterwards. But although I reminded myself that these were exceptional, very rare, superb examples, I confess I still worried! I would certainly never have thought of these as being bargains, or even potential bargains, at the time!

I am not sure if there is any lesson to be learned from all this. Yet I can now report that it is these that are now the treasures that have proved to be the most amazing bargains of all!

Not in the mood (or don’t have time) to scrapbook - try working on some scrapbook layout sketches for the events that you still need to put in your scrapbook.

Why?… We’ve found that scrapbook layout sketches help to do two things:

1. It helps you make more efficient use of your time when you actually get around to scrapbooking. If you already know how you want to layout your pictures ahead of time, think of how many pages you could actually get done.

2. It also helps you make more efficient use of your supplies. When you use a scrapbook layout sketch as the basis for your page, you reduce the risk of needing to waste your “good” scrapbook paper to visualize an idea.

Now, it’s best to keep all of your scrapbook layout sketches in one location - no sticky notes allowed! This can be as simple as a spiral notebook or a true sketch pad, but it’s critical that you have something in which to record your ideas for future scrapbook layouts. We often feel like ours is attached to our hips as we are always getting inspired by something new.

TIP: You can also use your sketch book to record color ideas. Do you love the colors in one of your son’s shirts? Did you see an unusual, but great, color combination on a lamp shade? Why not keep a record of the colors for a potential future layout?

It’s not difficult to do… Just cut out a few swatches of cardstock for the colors, glue them to a page in your sketch book and make notes, as appropriate (e.g., what theme it could apply to). It seems simple, but you’ll be surprised at what you don’t remember a few months down the road.

When looking for inspiration for scrapbook layouts, it helps to think outside the box. You will be surprised where you can find ideas for creative scrapbook layouts. Of course, there are countless books out there that will give you layout ideas, but if you’re looking for something a little cheaper, try the weekly sale papers and magazines - our personal favorites. Take some time one day and leaf through some magazines. Don’t look specifically at the items on the pages - look at how the items are laid out on each page and ask yourself the following:

Where are the pictures placed?

Where is the text…the title?

What shapes do they use?

Sometimes, you can even get ideas for embellishments.

When sketching your layouts, don’t forget to leave some room for the title. The title doesn’t need to take up a large portion of the layout, but it does deserve some consideration. There is no set of rules on titles, other than they should relate to your pictures. There is even some wiggle-room in that regard, as your title doesn’t have to describe the event (e.g., Merry Christmas or Happy Birthday).

You could describe the sentiments being expressed in the pictures (e.g., Joy, Courage, etc.). You could also use song titles, such as “You are the Sunshine of My Life” for a child’s layout or “Viva, Las Vegas!” to preserve a recent trip to “The Strip.”

While you will usually see a title on the left-hand page of a two-page spread, you can place your title just about anywhere…

Horizontally across the page (top, middle or bottom)

Vertically down the left- or right-hand side of the page

Lower right-hand corner of the page

Overlap on the focal picture

Incorporate into an embellishment (e.g., tag)

If your title is a little long, you may want to consider breaking it up into a title and a sub-title. Also, if it’s not already in your journaling, make sure to include a time element in your title. If the scrapbook layout is about a specific, non-recurring event, include the complete date (month-day-year). If it is a recurring event, such as Thanksgiving, you can just include the year.

Why is this important?…

Not only is your scrapbook a great way for you to display your pictures, it will become an heirloom with valuable genealogical information.

The bottom line with titles, as it is with scrapbooking, is to be creative. Use stickers, stamps, computer fonts or your own handwriting… whatever makes it your own!

Look in local art shops, galleries or even on the internet to find stained glass that catches your eye. Take your time and look at a variety of locations if they are available to you. You may find a particular artist or style of stained glass that you enjoy more than others. You may find that you prefer stained glass that is more random is design rather than stained glass that has been made into something recognizable.

Whatever your taste, you will enoy having unique stained glass pieces in any part of your home. Whether you decide to create your own or to purchase from a more accomplished artist, first decide to make great stained glass pieces part of your home today.
