The wonders of modern science continue to amaze us with new cures and essential information on healthy living: what to eat, what to drink, what do to; and, of course, what not to eat, drink, and do. All of this is quite wonderful.

Occasionally (just occasionally), some nice, innocent foods, drinks, and things-to-do get painted with the wrong health brush, and it’s only through a re-examination of scientific research data combined with a rather passionate public relations effort that these blameless foods, drinks, and activities are redeemed. Chocolate is a good example of how a food can get, well, steamrolled by the healthy eating train. Wine is another example. And of course, lest we forget the noble avocado, which many dieters (and even non dieters) have kept at bay with almost superstitious fervor.

Now, thankfully, we bring to light another dietary item that the North American stomach has been rudely banished in the caffeine-free craze of the last decade or so: tea!

The simple truth is that tea is one of the earth’s most generous sources of smart nutrition. In fact, by the time we’re done looking at the major benefits of tea, you’ll never be able to look at another cup the same way.

Tea Contains Antioxidants (the good guys)

The best known health benefit of tea - regardless of the color (and we’ll chat about that further below in this article) - is its antioxidant properties. These antioxidants derive from chemicals called polyphenols, which are present in the leaves.

The thing is, when the body digests food, something rather unhealthy is created in that process; something called “free radicals”. (And no, they don’t run around your body with picket signs calling for anarchy and setting off pipe bombs). Free radicals are rather dangerous, and if left to roam freely in your body, lead to a menu of pretty terrifying health conditions, including: cancer, heart disease, stroke, ocular/vision problems, and even dementia. Thankfully, however, antioxidants - which are plentiful in tea - come to the rescue and help ward off the damage that free radicals would otherwise do if left to roam and damage freely. Antioxidants from tea are thus the “good guys” that come to the rescue when the free radicals want to do their damage.

Tea Helps Your Smile

Let’s jump from one of tea’s best known benefits to one of its least known benefits: it contains fluoride, which is great for tea and bone health. Fluoride is the stuff that dentists (at least 4 out of 5, apparently) add to toothpaste and water treatment systems to help ward off cavities, and to promote overall dental health. Furthermore, some teas, such as oolong tea, can help kill unhealthy bacteria in the mouth.

Tea Keeps you Beautiful

Tea is Hearty

We briefly touched upon tea’s antioxidant properties; which is a fancy way of saying that tea helps deal with those evil free radicals that can lead to heart disease and stroke. Yet even though we’ve mentioned how tea “helps your heart”, it’s worth another mention because, well, it’s good to have a healthy heart. Tea has been shown to lower “bad” cholesterol (a.k.a. LDL cholesterol), which can help stave off the myriad of extremely serious problems associated with high “bad” cholesterol, including the aforementioned stroke and heart disease.

Vitamin Tea?

We’re not all that accustomed to enjoying vitamins from beverages that don’t come from fruits and vegetables. But really, all we’re “accustomed to” is accessing our vitamins from things that grow; and tea is certainly a thing that grows. In this light, it shouldn’t come as a big surprise (though it often is surprising to learn) that tea is loaded with vitamins, including: Vitamin A, B1, B2, B6. “But that’s not all” — there’s also a good dose of two very helpful minerals: potassium and manganese. Together, these vitamins and minerals help the body maintain a healthy heart, healthy nerves, healthy bones, and healthy digestion (among other healthy functions).

As tea is being vigorously analyzed by scientists everywhere (you know how they like to analyze things), there are some very promising health research trends that involve tea. At the top of this list is cancer. Some studies suggest that both green and black tea help cells avoid becoming cancerous. While this does not cure the cancer, it can potentially help cancer from spreading, and enable the successful intervention of other treatments. As promised: as you know, there are different kinds of tea available. Generally, they fall into categories based on color: green, tea, and red. This fact typically makes green tea the healthiest of the teas, and also typically means that green tea contains less caffeine than black tea. Trade In Your Diet For A Lifestyle!

Dieting is a pain. I think basically everyone would agree that having to adhere to a rigid restriction of your free-flow eating preferences puts a bit of a damper on the whole food experience. And eating should be one of the pleasures of life, right?

In my online diet and weight loss counseling service, I try to get around that big negative by blowing the doors off the conventional diet “box”. What we need to do here is make what is good for you TASTE GOOD TO YOU.

If you think about it, most of what is not good for you is basically made appetizing with loads of sauces, dips, dressing, salsa or salt and flavour enhancers. So it’s really just the sauce that tastes great. Don’t believe me? Try a burger with no mayo, no ketchup and no salt. Well maybe you still like the burger but my point is, we can make anything taste great with a little dressing, so how about doing that instead, with the “good for you” foods.

Now, one of the interesting things is that quite a lot of the “good foods” taste great with very little dressing, so we get an easy “win” there, no hardship involved. For the rest, we just get a little creative and, as an example of a really simple recipe that yields up the sweetest peppers ever, have a look at the recipe my wife has posted on my website www.gordonblack.com. So which are the “good foods”? Well, I think you can be pretty confident over in the fruit and vegetable area, there is not much there that can do damage to our weight management program; and what tastes better than a really ripe tomato, or papaya or mango?

Fish, shellfish, pasta, yes, pasta is in my plan big-time and with loads of real tomato sauce which means no cans, no jars, no production, no additives, preservatives and chemicals with names we can’t even pronounce. Instead we just go with some garlic cloves, some olive oil and some tomatoes and you can even use some salt! In my diet plan we eat a lot, but it’s WHAT we eat that counts.

Now, at the start I titled this article, Trade In Your Diet For A Lifestyle, and you’re probably thinking, where’s the lifestyle part? Well, here it is. You can eat loads of goodies as long as you make a corresponding investment in some form of exercise. It’s like a balancing act, as much as you load up one side, you have to balance it out with the other, and in this case the “other” is the regular exercise. Regular is the operative word, it must be regular even though it doesn’t have to be those exhausting “burn off the pounds” sessions I see so often. Just regular, consistent exercise with something you hopefully like doing, walking, cycling, swimming, golfing and if you really enjoy aerobics, that’s fine too.

So it’s really all about balance, and the freedom to eat as you wish, as long as you stay with the “good foods”, balanced out with that regular exercise. I think the trade-off is very liberating and certainly worth it.

You may now realize that the food you eat is the fuel for your body; just as gasoline fuels your car. If you put the wrong kind of gas in your car, it will run badly. The same concept applies to your body.

What’s The Secret?

I’m about to ask you to do something outrageous. Imagine drinking gasoline, and getting it in your nose at the same time. Now add your favorite snack foods to the picture, as if you they are forced into your mouth at the same time you are being forced to drink gasoline. Smell the fumes of the gasoline along with the smell of the snacks. Imagine a pain between your eyes and deep within your nose. You are beginning to feel like you might vomit soon. It’s too bad you’re sitting, watching television rather than getting away from the gasoline, snacks and vomiting with headache.

Back To Reality:

Unfortunately, you might as well be doing the above in reality when you drink a coke, eat Doritos, or even full meals that appear to be healthy. It’s all about balance! After all, too much gasoline going into your car’s engine will cause problems too.

What Should My Diet Plan Include?

Starting your diet with small amounts of cardio-vascular exercise in addition to better eating habits should make it much easier to continue eating better. Within a few days, you should begin to view food as a way to make your body function properly. Because you will have more energy and, most likely, a brighter outlook on life, you will feel like vomiting when you imagine your previous lifestyle and diet.

I know the method I’ve suggested is strange, but dieting successfully is not only a physical task, but psychological as well. So don’t forget to think analyze your improvements, thinking about why you feel better than before. That will help you make permanent changes.

Hidden Poison

Did you know that there might be poison in many of your favorite foods found on grocery store shelves everywhere? Breads, crackers, cookies, energy bars, tortillas, frozen pizza are just a few examples of these dangerous foods. The poison in these items is called partially hydrogenated fat, often referred to as trans-fatty acids.

A trans-fatty acid is usually made from a vegetable oil- corn, cottonseed, or soybean, for example- that has been treated by a process called hydrogenation to make it a solid at room temperature. Originally, when margerin first appeared in supermarkets, consumers were led to believe they could lower their risk of heart disease and cancer by replacing butter with this product. What became evident later is that the chemical process that made vegetable oil “look” like a saturated fat by solidifying caused it to act like one as well, making high levels of either fat a health risk.

Some of the harmful effects of trans-fatty acids include:

Cause you to store fat and burn sugar

Increase levels of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol

Decrease levels of high-density lipoproteins (HDL) or “good” cholesterol

Increase your perception of pain

Thankfully, trans fats are starting to appear on nutrition information on some food products. This trend will continue to rise as the law goes into affect next year forcing brands to disclose the amount of trans fat per serving.

Still, I’m betting you will see foods advertised as “low in trans fat.” Don’t fall for it.

Small amounts of trans fats are more harmful than larger amounts of saturated fats. A small increase in saturated fats results in a 17 percent increase in coronary artery disease. A similar increase in trans fats leads to a 93 percent increase!

As a general rule, avoid all foods containing trans-fatty oils. Most of these include foods that have to sit on a shelf, such as baked goods, snack chips, some national brands of peanut butter, candy bars, cookies, etc. Even some supposedly healthy diet products that are marketed as a food to help you lose weight contain this poison!

Don’t make the mistake of eating these product just because they’re there, or because “everyone else is.” Take your health into your hands and make sure you read those labels!

The Glycemic Index and Dieting

The field of nutrition is awash with charts, tables, diagrams, models, acronyms, and abbreviations; more than the average person can memorize. As such, one often comes across someone who has simply burnt out trying to keep track of how much to eat, when to eat it, how to find the calories from fat, the RDI, the DV, and so on. There is an overkill of useful information within the nutrition field, and it can ironically provoke one to grow weary and exhausted, tune out, and go grab a fast food burger.

Yet every once in a while, a concept within the nutrition field emerges that truly demands attention. Over a decade ago, the USDA’s “Food Pyramid” was one such concept because it helped eaters discover how many gaps existed in their typical daily diet. Now, as the Food Pyramid begins to take a new shape, and as the nutrition field works to establishes itself as the most important branch of health care in the 21st century, an invention called the Glycemic Index is taking center stage.

The Glycemic Index (GI) is not new; it has been around for more than 2 decades. Yet until recently, its exposure beyond the world of diabetes has been limited [i].

The Glycemic Index indicates how “high” or “low” blood sugar levels change in response to carbohydrate intake. A “high” Glycemic Index indicates carbohydrates with a swift breakdown, whereas a “low” Glycemic Index indicates carbohydrates with slow, gradual breakdown. Both terms are of equal importance to diabetics, because there are times with high Glycemic Index foods are required, and times where low Glycemic Index foods are required.

Indeed, the Glycemic Index itself is not new, but its application far beyond the borders of a diabetic dialogue is notable; especially for dieters.

People striving to lose weight often face a nemesis much tougher than establishing an exercise regimen or introducing healthier foods into their diet. The problem is one of energy. Many dieters are surprised - and disturbed - to learn that their diet program is causing them to lose more than inches and pounds: they are losing energy.

This is often expressed as a complaint, as in “I’m feeling weak”, or even “I can’t stay awake”. Many dieters and those advising them have erroneously chalked this up to a matter of attitude, or will power, or some non-biological cause.

The plain truth is that many dieters have been oblivious to the Glycemic Index, and hence, to the fact that many of the diet foods they have eaten - or are eating right now - score very high Glycemic Index levels. As such, these foods are providing a quick boost to blood sugar levels, and then setting up the dieter for the inevitable fall. This is because high GI foods typically increase blood sugar values, which in turn trigger the hormone insulin to clear sugar from the blood. Since blood sugar (a.k.a. glucose) largely dictates the body’s energy levels, it stands to reason that this process manifests as an initial boost in energy, and then as a depletion of energy. This rise and fall of blood sugar - and energy - is often described by dieters using a “roller-coaster” analogy: one minute they feel confident and strong, and the next, they are about to pass out and require some kind of stimulant in order to make it through the day.

Regrettably for many dieters, that stimulant is usually more high Glycemic Index foods, such as sugary snacks or soft drinks. It is easy to see how this experience can lead an individual to stop dieting. After all, before the diet, the individual was merely gaining weight. On the diet, the individual is gaining weight and is exhausted for most of the day. It is better to quit the diet.

The above scenario only takes place, however, when a dieter unwittingly eats high Glycemic Index foods. Research has shown that low Glycemic Index foods, which raise blood sugar levels much more gradually than high Glycemic Index foods, are very helpful for dieters [ii]. This is because a dieter will experience less of a “roller-coaster” ride while on the diet, and furthermore, will be less inclined to snack because energy in the form of blood glucose is being released slowly and gradually. Low Glycemic Index foods are much more efficient sources of energy than high Glycemic Index foods, because the body needs less insulin to convert food into energy [iii].

Despite the growing awareness that low Glycemic Index foods are beneficial, the world of diet foods has not kept pace. This is because many manufacturers are searching frantically to find low Glycemic Index carbohydrates sources for their products, and overlooking a basic, simple fact: the lowest possibly Glycemic Index is no carbohydrates at all.

These zero-carbohydrate/zero sugar nutritional supplements - which are quite rare in the market - do not deliver any sugar to the bloodstream. As a result, dieters do not have to worry about riding the “roller coaster” of energy spikes and pitfalls.

Yet there is an even greater benefit for dieters who choose a ‘zero sugar’ nutritional supplement. If that low Glycemic Index nutritional supplement is rich in complete protein, then it will act as a sort of antidote to high GI foods by helping to combat their adverse consequences.

For example, a dieter who eats a high Glycemic Index candy car can mitigate the roller-coaster spike in blood sugar levels by eating a nutritional supplement that has very low Glycemic Index and has a rich source of complete protein. This is because the protein in the nutritional supplement mixes with the high Glycemic Index of the candy bar, and effectively lowers the overall Glycemic Index. This is welcome news to dieters who would otherwise be seeing those extra carbohydrates transformed by insulin into triglycerides, and stored in adipose tissue; also known as body fat.

Currently, only a handful of nutritional supplements are designed to offer zero carbohydrates and thus score as low as possible on the Glycemic Index. And of these zero-carbohydrate products, even fewer offer a rich source of complete protein that effectively helps counter the blood sugar spike impact of high Glycemic Index foods.

It is inspiring to note that Glycemic Index is getting some well-deserved attention from outside the diabetic community, where it has helped millions of people eat wisely. Now, dieters and obese people can enjoy the wisdom that this index promotes.

Pausing To Catch My Breath - Book Review

Debra Warren has appropriately titled her book of poetry ‘Pausing to Catch My Breath’. The pages depict this mother and grandmother as someone who I would personally love to sit across from at a kitchen table with a huge pot of tea and talk for hours.

Her style implements simple vocabulary with an honest appeal, yet her work is astoundingly moving. This is the kind of poetry that I like to read at a slow pace in order to allow the statements to really sink in. ‘I think’ is a good example of what I mean. ‘Today’ challenges readers to see beyond the mundane, by considering what others are experiencing that very moment. ‘Its Never Too Late’ was a moving piece about many kinds of incarceration. I related with ‘Trapped’, especially where she wrote, “I am trapped inside a body that betrays”. ‘Pausing to Catch My Breath’ is a particularly beautifully written piece. I hope to retain in memory my favorite line of this poem, “Hearing the music, I dance to my yesterdays”. Debra also displays an appealing sense of humor in her work. I loved the imagery of viewing cruel and stupid people as “human speed bumps” along the road of life.

‘Pausing to Catch My Breath’ most certainly displays Debra’s ability to use uncomplicated prose to create deep emotion, intellectual thought and crisp images.

Involvement in certain hobbies can be due to all kinds of factors, in some cases it stems from a curiosity point of view, with others it can be because a friend insisted on showing you how, but the urge can also come from a personal need or challenge to create and make something which you know is the only way in which you will obtain that certain something.

You could begin your metal casting by using the most basic furnace, equipment & tools, many people who started in this way are now experienced metal casters, and are able to create all manner of things from metal, they have also discovered that sooner or later, other people get to hear about their special talents, and it’s not long before the odd paying job comes in, which helps to make your hobby self sufficient

The type of people that get involved with hobby metal casting range from radio controlled racing car enthusiasts, Go-Kart Builders, antique restorers, vintage motorcycle and car rebuilders, people who build miniature steam engines & aero engines and parts. Some people have found It is even possible to design and build miniature engines that run on gasoline, there are several home trained hobby foundry workers who have undertaken to design & build intricate patterns and cores to cast and build miniature 4 cylinder & V8 engines, real engines that have spark plugs and they run on petrol.

They have managed to make all of the many parts required for these amazing home designed & built projects.
