The Art Of Getting Your Kids To Talk To You

Being a parent isn’t easy. Some days just getting everyone in your family all together at the same time for dinner can seem like the “impossible dream”. Between after school sports and clubs and working and errands and carpools, it’s not surprising that almost half of the parents in a recent survey said they feel a growing distance between themselves and their children.

Today’s children have more things to deal with than kids did even twenty years ago. Drugs, violence, mixed messages in advertising, peer pressure, packed schedules and outside activities all add to the pressure they face.

So how, in the midst of all this chaos, do you find time to talk to your kids — and more importantly, have them talk back to you?

Here are several ideas that can help:

1. Eat dinner together as a family at least three times a week. Conversations flow easier when they happen around the dinner table. If your family is conversationally-challenged in the beginning, think of conversation starters before each meal. Plan a family vacation, letting each child talk about where they’d like to go, or what they’d like to do. Talk about current events, the latest movies or upcoming special events. Ask your children open-ended questions that have to be answered with more than yes or no.

2. Turn off the outside world. Set aside “family time” each night and have everyone turn off their phones, the computers and the television. Let your friends and extended family know that you won’t be available during that time, and stick to it. Your kids (especially teenagers) may joke about it, but secretly they’ll probably be delighted. Use this time to reconnect with each other. Watch a movie, play board games, take turns reading out loud, but whatever you do, do it together.

3. Cook at least one meal a week together. Even your youngest children can do something to help. If your kitchen is too small for everyone to fit, schedule a “helper” or have your children be responsible for different parts of the meal. Your family will grow closer during this time, and your kids may even start the conversations themselves. (You can always get the ball rolling by talking about things you did with your parents. While you may not be cool, chances are your kids think your parents are, and will be impressed).

4. Make it safe for your kids to talk to you. Let them know that you won’t get angry or upset if they talk to you about what’s going on. If they tell you something “off the record” then let it stay that way. (Emergencies and dangerous situations aside).

5. Listen to what they have to say. If you’re working, or doing something else when your child starts to talk to you, they may give up if they know your attention is really somewhere else. Give them your undivided attention when they’re speaking.

6. Use active listening skills. Make sure that you understand what your child is telling you. Repeat what they told you and ask questions.

7. Set aside special time to spend with each child. It may be nothing more than taking one child at a time with you when you run errands, but let each child know that you value spending special time with them.

8. Be patient. Don’t expect a “perfect” family. If you’re not June Cleaver and your husband isn’t Howard Cunningham, it’s okay. Just remember that perfect families really don’t exist outside of television re-runs.

Just keep trying, and you’ll learn the art of conversation with your kids isn’t as hard as you thought!

Choosing The Right Gift

Although there are many variables to choosing the right gift for
the woman in your life some rules always apply. Following are
some basic tips to help you through the murky waters of choosing
a gift.

Pay attention. Take a good look at the home decor of the woman
who will receive your gift. Does she decorate with angels,
candles, family pictures, posters or art. The items a woman
chooses for her home will give many clues as to what she would
enjoy receiving.

Ask questions. It never hurts to ask a woman what she enjoys
receiving as a gift. Ask her to describe her most favorite gift.
Ask her to tell you what she enjoys giving as a gift. This often
will be the thing that she enjoys receiving as well. Encourage
an open dialogue about gift giving and listen to the clues she
is giving you.

Don’t take the easy way out. Don’t just send a dozen flowers or
a box of chocolates and expect an overwhelming response. Women
love to receive gifts that are meaningful and matched to their
interest. If you do send flowers (and sometimes you should) add
on a special teddy bear, picture frame or balloons to make the
gift more personal.

Avoid candy or fitness related items. Don’t give candy unless it
comes with another gift such as flowers or as part of a gift
basket. That way the woman can give away the candy and still
enjoy the gifts that came with it. Too many of us are watching
our weight and avoiding fatty and sugary foods. Fitness
equipment gifts may be considered an insult as though you are
criticizing the woman’s weight. Don’t think you’re being helpful
by giving such a gift - it will backfire on you!

Don’t buy a gift that you like or want and give it to someone
else. This trick will not work on any woman with half a brain!
Many years ago I had a committed relationship with a boyfriend
that never, and I mean never, bought me a gift. One year he
excitedly told me he had bought tickets to a concert for my
birthday! I was surprised and pleased until he announced that he
bought tickets to a Pink Floyd concert. I listened to Madonna
and Michael Jackson at the time not classic rock. Needless to
say, out of politeness I pretended to be happy and excited and
went to the concert and had a good time. Giving a gift to
someone that is something you like or want is selfish and sure
to cause serious repercussions in your relationship. Don’t do it.

If in doubt give a gift certificate. Many on-line stores offer
gift certificates that are convenient and easy to redeem. It may
seem like a gift certificate is the easy way out but it isn’t.
If you purchase a gift certificate from a store that offers
gifts interesting to the woman in your life then you are doing
her a huge favor. Not only will she get a great gift that
interests her but she can choose something that she will
actually use and enjoy!

Make your gift giving successful by taking the time to learn
about the women in your life and to appreciate them for their
unique gifts. Women love to receive gifts and will reciprocate
in kind. Don’t wait for a birthday or other special occasion.
Give gifts frequently and unexpectedly and you will be surprised
by the response you receive!

Looking Beyond The Tip

Golf is not just about looking at the best golf club tip in
town. There are also other factors that you should consider.

Stay relaxed

One of things that you should remember is so easy and simple to
do but ironically, most golfers forget it. It is to relax.
Although of course, for many people, relaxing is easier said
than done, especially on the first round, since it brings
intense pressure. This additional pressure will increase the
heart rate of your body and will diminish your chances of having
a great tee shot.

Focus on the breathing that you have before you go straight
hitting the ball off. A few deep, long breaths would do the
trick. The key point here is you should have the main focus on
your shot.

Your wrists should not be used

When you are to hit your drive, it is of paramount importance to
remember that your wrists and hands are not the ones giving you
enough power you need in driving the ball. The power you need
should come from your shoulders in your back swing, when you are
winding the body up while you prepare for your down swing.

Any wrist movement could lead to inconsistent ball striking,
leading to an inconsistent trajectory of the ball. Keep the
wrists straight, and you will see how your drive has become more
and more consistent and accurate.

In order for you to realize, visualize

Before you really hit the shot, stand some few feet, maybe about
two to three feet, behind the golf ball and try to visualize how
the ball would take the flight path you want. Visualize how the
ball is going to take off, “watch” it in air and its landing
place. This will dramatically increase the chances you have in
putting the golf ball in the exact place where you prefer it.

Prepare what you need to prepare

Before you go straight hitting your target, make sure first that
you have spent some hours practicing to get a sense of how to
sing. Do not strike your first drive without you warming up. If
you have no time anymore for hitting some practice balls, spend
at least five minutes to warm up. Before you step on to the tee,
make sure you have spent some time on the practice range, to get
into the feeling of the swing. Never, ever, hit your first drive
without warming up. Do some exercises. This will give you a more
relaxed and flexible feeling.

Scrapbooking - Photos Tell the Story

Have lots of old photos lying around the house? You find one
every once in a while in a book or under the bed. Occasionally,
you even find those old packets from the developing with a few
pictures. Why not start organizing those photos on your way to
making an unforgettable scrapbook?

Many people assume that the best way to organize photos is to
put them in chronological order. However, if you have many
photos that are unlabeled or dated, this may be difficult.
Rather than dealing with this, try organizing by theme. There
are countless organizational themes including: Christmases,
Vacations, Family Reunions, Children’s sports teams, an overseas
trip, or a specific time period (college years). Try not to make
them so broad that every photo will fit in, but also don’t
restrict them too much.

Making a scrapbook of each theme is a great idea because you can
put them together fairly rapidly-each page doesn’t have to be
completely unique. In fact, you want to create unity between the
pages. This will save money because you can use the same colors
of background pages and mix and match accessories.

Do a ‘cover page’ for each year or event. If you choose a
‘Sports’ theme, have a section for soccer, one for basketball,
etc. Keep the cover page bold and simple-maybe one photo and the
date and location. Have a running continuity among the cover
pages will bring a nice unity throughout the book.

Themed books are easy and enjoyable to look out and they show
how children grow and styles change over the years. Even
visitors to your home will enjoy flipping through albums like
this, whereas a chronological album might bog them down.

To help yourself stay organized when it comes to all those
photos, label a few envelopes with some possible themes.
Whenever you develop film or print photos, try to divide them
into the proper envelopes. That way whenever you are ready to
start your next scrapbook, the photos you need will be ready to
go…and you won’t have to search under the bed or in any books!

Cool As A Cucumber

Cucumbers are easy and fun to grow and they are a very special
ingredient in many salad dishes. They can be the star attraction
as well. So plant some cucumbers and watch them change into
tasty, delicious mealtime ingredients. You won’t regret the
experience of gardening with cucumbers and your taste buds will
truly thank you.

Here are a few ways to prepare those mighty fine additions to
any meal: Cucumber and Onion Salad (Always tastes better the
next day) 4 cucumbers, peeled and sliced very thinly 2-1/2
onions, sliced 1-1/4 cup sour cream 1-1/2 tsp. seasoned salt 1/2
tsp. pepper Combine all ingredients, making sure that the
cucumbers are well coated. Cover and place in refrigerator
overnight. Line plates with lettuce leaves and spoon salad over.
Garnish with finely chopped parsley, mint leaves, or dill. So
fine! **************************** Have 6 medium cucumbers, and
peel smoothly. Cut in half lengthwise. Cut around the pulp and
remove the seeds very carefully. Marinate the cucumbers in
French Dressing for 1/2 hour and drain well. Fill the cucumbers
with your favorite salad-chicken, tuna, turkey, shrimp, etc.
Nicely round out the tops. Sprinkle some finely chopped parsley
on the ends. Spread a dab of mayonnaise over the top. Place two
vegetable flowers on top, cut from beets, carrots, or use narrow
strips of green peppers for stems and tiny pieces of a bell
pepper as the flower (yellow or red). On lettuce-lined plates,
place your cucumber boat and add tomato slices on the side or a
few slices of fresh fruit wedges (cantaloupe, some grapes, or
watermelon). You’re set to sail to some great reviews!
******************************* Hot Cukes: Peel a few cucumbers.
Cut in half lengthwise and discard the seeds. Brush with French
Dressing and let stand, covered, in a refrigerator, for about
one-half hour. Prepare two plates, one with flour for dredging,
and one with an egg wash, with garlic or onion salt instead of
regular salt. Drain cucumbers and then dip in wash, then in
flour. Saute very gently and carefully in hot oil about 4-5
minutes or until golden and crisp. Drain and serve with grilled
fish or steak. Hot and tasty! ******************************
However you serve your garden-fresh cucumbers, you’ll have a
tasty, refreshing addition to any meal. ENJOY! ©Arleen M. Kaptur
