Feeling Bad
I was taking a break from Everest Poker and playing in a home poker game a few years ago, and there was a new guy at our game. It’s a pretty regular game, so when a new guy starts playing, it’s fairly obvious. He was a friend of a friend, and he was a really nice guy. A little too nice, apparently.
As the game progressed, players started to get eliminated, and eventually there were five of us at the final poker table. I was dealt an Ace-King unsuited and raised pre-flop, and the new guy was the only person who called. The flop came out Ace-8-4 with two Spades (I was Spadeless), so I went all-in to discourage him from chasing a flush. He called me and turned over an Ace-10 of Spades and put his head in his hands.
“I hope you win it,” he said. I thought he was kidding, but when the third Spade came on the river, he seemed more frustrated than I was. He stood up and apologized as he shook my hand, saying “I hate this part of the game.” I heard that he was a nice guy, but this was ridiculous. I was so flabbergasted that I forgot to be pissed that he drew out on me.
