Someone recently asked me why anyone of sane mind would want to move to a third world country such as Costa Rica and actually plan to live there. I would like to share, and to document, the reasons for this to my fellow American citizens who may someday decide to pick up their roots and do the same.

One of the primary reasons Costa Rica was selected is because of the multitude of climates that you can select to live in. If you want to live by the ocean and the great beaches of Costa Rica where it is hot and the humidity is high, the Caribbean coast is the ideal location for you.
If you desire to live near the ocean and more great beaches where it is hot but the humidity is significantly lower, then the upper Pacific coast is the place for you. If you like it better in the temperate zone between 65 and 75 degrees, the western central valley is beckoning to you. Drive 20 km north in the central valley and you may need a sweater by day and two blankets by night. The coastal areas are the only places where you may need air conditioning and then only occasionally. There are cooling breezes throughout the country.

Another major reason is the lower cost of living. Utilities such as electric, water, and phone rates are drastically reduced. Food costs are extremely low with most restaurant meals so inexpensive that dining out may cost only a few U.S. dollars. Housing in many parts of the country can be obtained for as little as $100.00 U.S. per month for an unfurnished home or apartment. The purchase of a three bedroom home in many locations can be found for $30,000 or less. There are many retirees who will vouch that they live very comfortably on a retirement income of less than $20,000 U.S.
The Costa Rican people are found to be a gentle, non-violent, and considerate people. They believe in family and traditional social mores that many times appear to be lost in other countries. Costa Rica itself is a democratic country, does not have a standing Army, and relies on its police force to maintain law and order which they do very well.

Violent crime is almost unheard of in Costa Rica. There are occasional break-ins of vehicles, some purse snatchings, but these are not of the violent nature where firearms are used and human life is in danger as in many other countries. These mostly occur in or around the larger cities. In the country and smaller towns they are almost unheard of. Costa Rica is one of the safest countries to vacation or to retire in that can be found.
Another very appealing fact to many is that foreign residents may purchase property in Costa Rica with many safeguards in place by the government. These may be used for vacation, investment, or retirement purposes. Property taxes are extremely low and there is a ready source of labor for domestic and other purposes in the country with maid and general labor costs of just over $1.00 U.S. per hour. Homes can be constructed by master builders for one fourth to one fifth the cost of a similar home in the U.S.
I have not as yet mentioned the breathtaking scenery of the mountains, rainforests, wildlife, birds, waterfalls, fishing, sailing, boating, and the many wonderful tours that can be taken from the many good tour operators in Costa Rica which are outstanding.

I am sure that given the proper time, I could climb out of my hammock here on the terrace where a cool breeze is blowing, put down my drink, and think of many other reasons why someone would choose to live in the wonderful third world country of Costa rica. However, at this time I have overtaxed myself in my accounts of these wonders. As we say in Costa Rica, “if it does not get accomplished today, there is always manana”. I hope I have answered some of the more basic questions of why anyone would move to Costa Rica. As part of the important Triangle Region of North Carolina, Chapel Hill’s history predates most of American history. Indeed, the nation’s first public university - The University of North Carolina - is situated in the town and shapes much of the town’s culture, liberal mannerisms, and populace. A trip to Chapel Hill is a must for those who visit the Raleigh-Durham area and a little walking tour can reveal much about Chapel Hill’s flavor.

Like so many college towns, Chapel Hill is the University of North Carolina. As the town’s largest employer, UNC’s influence permeates the town. Indeed without UNC, Chapel Hill would probably not exist. Still, nearly 50,000 residents call Chapel Hill home and it, along with the neighboring town of Carrboro, offer much to visitors.

College basketball fans know UNC because of its men’s basketball team which recently won the college national basketball championship. With a very good women’s team on hand as well, UNC’s basketball programs are considered to be among the top programs in the nation. Still, interest in sports isn’t for everyone and Chapel Hill goes well beyond the sports amenities extolled by the university.

Strolling down the streets of UNC reveals all that the town has to offer: a haven for artists, a home for improvisational comedians, the requisite coffee bars, health food stores, eateries, live music performances, colorful murals, and more. Festivals in the spring and fall bring in tens of thousands of people to the downtown area, but on campus activities easily dwarf what regularly goes on in the business district.

Founded in 1792, UNC has an onsite planetarium that was built in the late 1940s. It has been used by some NASA astronauts as part of their training for various missions. The planetarium is open to the public and it, along with the universities 16 libraries, is a popular place to visit. Beyond that, there are enough student run shows and events to keep the Chapel Hill visitor busy even outside of basketball season.

The best times of the year to walk the streets of Chapel Hill are in the Spring and in the Fall. Summer heat and winter cold tend to limit the outdoor activities, but the town thrives year round nevertheless. Yes, the requisite color in town is “Carolina Blue” so get used to the Tarheel way of life when visiting historic Chapel Hill, the home of the prestigious University of North Carolina.

They say the light is clearer in Cornwall, washed of impurities by the barbed Atlantic winds. Free of pollution, the small village of Mousehole draws artists from all corners of England. Amateurs and professionals alike delight in capturing the character and make-up of this beautiful Cornish community.

I took the B3315 south from Penzance and headed for Mousehole. The road stretched along the coast, a narrow passage of twists and turns and steep inclines. Tall trees lined the steep banks, clinging perilously close to the cliff’s edge.

The high summer sun blazed down from above, glistening on the peaceful ocean. Never was there a more tranquil setting. Across the sea St Michael’s Mount stood defiantly, guarding the bay.

It wasn’t long before I reached Mousehole. As I entered the village the road narrowed further, just wide enough for two lanes. Everywhere seemed a little cramped and confined. Homes were placed almost on top of one another. This was a very intimate place not really suited to traffic. Driving here was making me claustrophobic.

The only way to explore this place was by foot so I parked the car at the first opportunity. Tight cobbled streets led the way to the harbour and panoramic views of Mount’s Bay.

Along the way I passed at least four artists, brushes in hand. One sat in a quiet back street endeavouring to capture the intimacy of a serene Cornish fishing village. He was a young man in his twenties and sat on a wonderfully efficient contraption that included the easel and seat all in one unit. He acknowledged me as I stood behind and gazed enviously at his talent.

I continued towards the harbour and a tiny beach, hoping to catch the young man later to witness his finished masterpiece. A gentle slope led to a small area of golden sand enclosed by the old harbour walls. Boats lay idly around waiting for the passing tide. Children ventured further out to get a taste of the sea.

The seasoned pub overlooking the harbour was at the hub of the community. The low beams and maze of corridors gave a traditional feel to the place. The stair walls were decorated with the photographs of deceased fisherman, drowned in stormy seas in the 1980s. Few can appreciate the courage of these men as they went about their day to day business to earn their livelihoods.

As I drove out of Mousehole the village stayed with me. So quintessentially Cornish, this deep-rooted fishing village has defied the sands of time.

THE TRIP - Shuttles leave from both Arusha and Nairobi at 08h00 hours and 14h00 hours each day. The time spent at Namanga can depend on the number of people on the bus and how strict customs and immigration officials are on the day. The whole trip can take about five to six hours.

THE BUS - There are several companies, Riverside, Bobbies and Devanu are probably the most convenient they all leave from the Parkside hotel in Nairobi and the Mount Meru Hotel in Arusha; usually 25 seater Coaster buses. They will drop passengers off at main hotels in the city centers but it is always best to make these arrangements with the driver before you set off.

WHAT YOU PASS - The route between Arusha and Nairobi has some interesting villages along the way. There is a possibility of seeing some wild animals. If there has been rain then the green lush african bush is interesting to watch, if it is dry everything tends to be a bit brown and beige.

THE BORDER - You cross between Kenya and Tanzania at the Namanga Border. Remember you are in a foreign country and be polite and relax and enjoy the experience. As with all Government Officials sometimes they are not always the politest people in the world. However, I must say I have never had a bad experience with Immigration at the Namanga border and in fact always found them to be helpful on both sides of the border.

The driver will explain what to do and where to go; just follow the others on the bus who will have done the crossing many times.

IMMIGRATION - Three month Visa: - Visa are obtainable at the border crossing and airports. Remember to have the correct money ready in US Dollars (cash!).

Transit Visa: - If you arrive in Kenya to travel to Tanzania only a Transit Visa for a couple of days can be issued at a price of US$20 per transit.

Check you visa stamps to ensure the correct dates are entered.

Always get receipts for anything you are required to pay i.e. visas.

Ensure the number of days/weeks allowed to stay on your passport’s visa stamp agree with the time you expect to remain in Tanzania or Kenya.
