The telecom commissioner for the EU, Viviane Reding, has hinted that she might continue in her role for an unprecedented third term, much to the dismay of some internet service providers.

Reding, who is credited with reducing data roaming charges across the EU, also wants to free up the spectrum for mobile broadband and fasten the transition towards digital TV. She holds the dubious distinction of being honored with the ‘Internet Villain award’ at the UK Internet Service Providers Association Awards in 2007.

Reding, in her speech at the Lisbon Council held at Brussels, said that she wanted to see Europe as a broadband super power, with excellent choice in wireless broadband service for its future users and an enviable broadband technology that offered good quality broadcasting. The adoption rates of mobile broadband by small and medium sized businesses have been dismal, against all expectations. This has obviously disappointed the operators no end. To give some boost to the market, Orange has now come out with some attractive deals to encourage business users to go for mobile broadband along with other providers offering mobile broadband free laptop offers.

The offer, which would be only valid between May and July 2009, would see Orange slashing its mobile broadband prices by half. This would mean that for existing customers of Orange, a new mobile broadband contract would come at £7.50 per month, while businesses that are not currently availing of any Orange services can gain access by going for a £10 a month contract.

According to Pauline Trotter, who works with Ovum, a telecom analyst company, the reason why mobile broadband uptake by small businesses has been so slow is that they have no idea what they would eventually be charged. The announcement by Orange is likely to encourage the businesses to try out mobile broadband. The move may also force similar initiatives from other service providers, she feels.

After the duration of the deal gets over, i.e. post July 31, businesses would be able to sign up for the usual Orange packages. Business Everywhere Unlimited would be available at a monthly charge of £15, while Business Everywhere Traveller, which allows up to 25MB usage while roaming usage would come at £35 a month.
