UK Intelligence Services and Police against Mandelson’s Anti-Piracy Proposal

The UK intelligence services and the police fear that if the Government goes ahead with their scheme of disconnecting the lines of internet pirates, it would make catching offenders at work more difficult. Therefore, an appeal has been made to the Government to drop the plan.

Business Secretary Lord Mandelson has pledged that his next Digital Economy Bill would contain new measures to fight illegal file sharing of music and films by cutting off the broadband connection of suspected offenders.

An article published by The Times reveals that both the national security services (including MI5 and MI6) and the UK police believe offenders will turn to encryption in order to escape conviction. This will increase the cost as well as the effort for those responsible for monitoring internet traffic.

Lord Mandelson’s suggestion has not gone down too well with the internet service providers such as BT and Carphone Warehouse. These companies say approving technical measures to monitor and punish illegal downloaders could in turn raise the price of broadband for the average consumer by 2 pounds a month. For information on your ISP click best broadband provider for the latest on their services and offers. The consumer groups have also criticised the plan by pointing out that its implementation would be a breach of the customers’ rights to privacy.

The public is also not impressed by the proposal. In a recent YouGov poll, almost 70 percent voted for a right to a trial in court for the users suspected of illegal downloading, before cutting off their internet service.

EU Commissioner Reding May Carry On for another Term

The telecom commissioner for the EU, Viviane Reding, has hinted that she might continue in her role for an unprecedented third term, much to the dismay of some internet service providers.

Reding, who is credited with reducing data roaming charges across the EU, also wants to free up the spectrum for mobile broadband and fasten the transition towards digital TV. She holds the dubious distinction of being honored with the ‘Internet Villain award’ at the UK Internet Service Providers Association Awards in 2007.

Reding, in her speech at the Lisbon Council held at Brussels, said that she wanted to see Europe as a broadband super power, with excellent choice in wireless broadband service for its future users and an enviable broadband technology that offered good quality broadcasting. She added that the digital dividend had come at the perfect time to make sure that this dream became a reality. Using the radio spectrum in a resourceful way would help achieve this.

The value of analog TV spectrum, according to Reding’s estimate, is between 150bn and 200bn. Reding, who received a gold medal from the European merit foundation in 2002, is hoping for a swift response from the individual states across the EU, which will result in an extra benefit of 50bn.

She issued a call to all EU governments to not wait until 2012 - the time limit for the final digital switch-over, but to act now so that businesses and individuals could benefit from these measures.

Cheaper Mobile Broadband for Small and Medium Businesses from Orange

The adoption rates of mobile broadband by small and medium sized businesses have been dismal, against all expectations. This has obviously disappointed the operators no end. To give some boost to the market, Orange has now come out with some attractive deals to encourage business users to go for mobile broadband along with other providers offering mobile broadband free laptop offers.

The offer, which would be only valid between May and July 2009, would see Orange slashing its mobile broadband prices by half. This would mean that for existing customers of Orange, a new mobile broadband contract would come at £7.50 per month, while businesses that are not currently availing of any Orange services can gain access by going for a £10 a month contract.

According to Pauline Trotter, who works with Ovum, a telecom analyst company, the reason why mobile broadband uptake by small businesses has been so slow is that they have no idea what they would eventually be charged. The announcement by Orange is likely to encourage the businesses to try out mobile broadband. The move may also force similar initiatives from other service providers, she feels.

After the duration of the deal gets over, i.e. post July 31, businesses would be able to sign up for the usual Orange packages. Business Everywhere Unlimited would be available at a monthly charge of £15, while Business Everywhere Traveller, which allows up to 25MB usage while roaming usage would come at £35 a month.

LTE Trials by Motorola in UK Bring 4G in Focus

The 3G technology will soon take its much-expected leap to 4G. Keeping this future advancement of mobile broadband in perspective, Motorola has decided to carry out LTE trials in UK later this week. It is widely hoped that LTE or Long Term Evolution will create new standards in mobile broadband speeds.

LTE trials have already been done in the past elsewhere in the world, but in UK Motorola will be the first to attempt them using a prototype LTE device. Joe Cozzolino, senior Vice President of Motorola Home and Networks Mobility sees Motorola as the leader in the 4G advancement and believes that the technology will be able to bring down the cost of servicing for the operators, while allowing them to provide their customers value added personalized services. LTE technology is capable of providing speeds up to hundreds of gigabits per second.

However, there is still some time before LTE hits the market, as the spectrum is yet to be auctioned sometime later this year in UK. Meanwhile, HSPA+, which has already been trialled at speeds up to 16MB by Vodafone, may prove to be the next step forward in mobile broadband.

However, WiMax could spoil the party for LTE advocates if the technology finds more support from operators. Only time can reveal the true winner of this mobile technology race!

Is this the End for VoIP?

VoIP undoubtedly has had an influence on the way many people use their phone icluding how long they spend on it. It would also be accurate to say the emergence of VoIP technology also got some of the Telecoms giants hot under the collar. So is VoIP the future? Will fixed landlines become an archaic symbol of yesteryear?. It seems that there are several barriers which when looked at together, may possible prove insurmountable. For this reason I will suggest that far from being an unstoppable force, perhaps VoIP has had its day.

It’s becoming increasingly evident that something being hugely popular and used my millions of people doesn’t necessarily mean that it will make any money. This has been exemplified with both Skype and Facebook as they struggle to find a way of successfully monetizing themselves. The problem with Skype as with other VoIP operators is the strange nature of the relationship with the incumbent telecoms operators. Much in the same way as a parasite is dependent on its host for survival, so too VoIP operators find themselves at the behest of the Telecoms giants whose networks they need for survival.

Lack of any physical infrastructure poses a big hurdle for VoIP operators, where the competitive nature of the market has also meant prices are tending towards zero. To attract any outside capital or investment, any potential investor needs something more to invest in than the purely the brand. As is the case with some mobile VoIP operators such as the fledgling mobile VoIP operator Truphone having some proprietary technology of their own has meant they have been able to get hold of funding. However without being able to generate a sizeable income the likelihood they will be able to build their own network is a distant prospect.

It was only recently that T-Mobile took action against Truphone illustrating VoIP operators’ vulnerability. In this instance the courts took action to prevent T-Mobile from barring calls to numbers which had been attributed to Truphone which perhaps can be seen as a ray of hope for the future of flexing of the muscles of Hutchison Wampoa, which owns the 3 networks has been more successful, effectively removing the possibility of widely available Wi-Fi, arguably signalling the end for Skype.

How things will develop remains to be seen but it seems like the incumbent telecom operators may just be starting to fight back.

Identify What Broadband is and Revel in Watching TV Shows Over the Internet

Broadband is super speed www access, & is somewhat faster than old dial-up access over a modem. If you yourself are browsing this www guide then you are maybe looking at obtaining www access for the very first time, or looking to increase your internet speed to broadband.

The primary advantage of high speed internet access is surfers are able to download music over the worldwide web all this has became astonishingly popular with Channel 4 launching their new software which will allow surfers to view the very latest episodes of Golden Girls. With fast internet access users might well also get pop music and scary movies at a much better speed than super slow dial-up access.

Fast broadband is straightforward to set up. The very first step people will need to do is sign up with an ISP, of course known as an Internet Service Provider, and the internet corporation will supply surfers with a connection using your home connection. If you already have an ISP then make sure people try a broadband comparison website for impartial guidance on the leading offers. Users may quickly grab the finest deals with a broadband comparison service by just entering in your street and house number & then the website will return a list of provider packages in your area. You will be under no contract to register with any broadband provider while surfers browse the high speed broadband offers. Click here to compare broadband packages with Compare Broadband UK.

Once people have signed up with your Internet Service Provider the ISP will often arrange a day for connection & supply surfers with any required hardware and software. The wireless routers & broadband software might often come with step by step guides & most ISP’s can often offer people IT guidance if needed.

Once people have successfully connected to the internet surfers should start to rejoice in the super fast speeds of high speed broadband. If you are going to get music, TV programmes such as Stargate or hollywood movies please be wary of any download allocations users may have on your package. Hip hop music and telly downloads such as Cops might well take up a lot of your ‘download allocation’ as the broadband business are massive in file size.

What is the Difference Between Cisco Original and Third Party Memory?

What is the Difference Between Cisco Original and Third Party Memory?

One secret to Cisco “Original” memory is that Cisco does not manufacture any memory themselves. The memory parts customers get when they purchase Cisco equipment are manufactured by a Cisco approved OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). The OEM could be any company from Cisco’s Approved Vendor List (AVL) which includes companies such as OKI Semiconductor, NEC Electronics, and Samsung among others. Cisco does not make their AVL public.

Approved/OEM Cisco memory refers to memory parts manufactured by companies on Cisco’s AVL; these memory modules have been engineered specifically for use by Cisco Systems and undergo strict and comprehensive testing before being approved by Cisco for use with their routers and other products. These modules are guaranteed to have 100% compatibility with their corresponding Cisco equipment and are backed by a lifetime warranty.

Third party memory modules on the other hand are manufactured by companies not on Cisco’s AVL and are not tested nor approved by Cisco Systems. The manufacturer does offer warranty and compatibility guarantee for these memory modules but Cisco does not. And although manufacturers of such memory modules claim to be fully compliant with Cisco’s specifications, Cisco does hold the right to refuse service, under warranty, when the fault is deemed to be caused by the 3rd party memory modules. PC Wholesale guarantees compatibility for all third party Cisco memory modules, many of which are built to exceed Cisco’s specifications. Also, all third-party memory sold by PC Wholesale has a lifetime warranty - Cisco OEM/Original memory is only under warranty for 90 days. In addition, the cost of third party memory can be considerably less than Cisco Original/OEM memory.

There are advantages to both choices. The specter that Cisco could deny warranty service to those using third party memory is the best reason to only purchase Cisco Original memory. Both Cisco original and third party memory are built to the benchmarks set by Cisco by large OEM semiconductor companies, and third party memory provides a lower cost option to users with budget constraints.

Pointers in FRx Financial Reporting

Microsoft Business Solution - Great Plains is an integrated business solution package targeted for small to medium-sized businesses in the US market. Its many features combined with customization capabilities make it one of the best ERP software packages available today.

Great Plains uses the ODBC drivers installed by Microsoft SQL Server, making data accessible from each of its modules to be used for other applications such as Crystal Reports. In addition, Great Plains was developed in a proprietary programming language called Dexterity, which allows access to all of Great Plains resources such as tables, reports and scripts.

In addition to Crystal Reports, Great Plains also integrates with FRx, a financial reporting software. FRx pulls information from your General Ledger (or from any general ledger for that matter) then understands your fiscal periods, chart of account and other balances to tie it all into an easy and accurate financial report. FRx also eliminates the need to print and copy because of output options such as Excel (spreadsheet), ASCII, OLAP, or FRx DrillDown to be emailed or posted to the Web for easy access both internally and externally.

FRx reporting enables users to become more productive and effective. However, consultants reported that some problems exist with FRx upgrading. Issues were also raised with remapping FRx when migration of Great Plains from a legacy platform (Pervasive SQL or Ctree) to MS SQL Server took place. The following are some pointers with regards to FRx:

  • SYSDATA - When upgrading FRx, make sure that it points to the proper SYSDATA directory. This is where FRx stores all of its reports.

  • Directories Structure - FRx stores its report to the SYSDATA directory on your server. When moving FRx to a different server or changing its directories structure on your workstation, make sure that workstations are unified in structure with your server. Otherwise, you will have an output path mismatch.

  • Service Pack - It is imperative that you apply the latest service packs with your FRx software. There were some issues reported with FRx being unstable out of the box. The latest service packs can be downloaded from Microsoft Business Solutions website (Partner Source or Customer Source).

  • Back Arrow - When installing FRx, we suggest that you never hit the “Back Arrow” key. There have been reports of the FRx being corrupted when this rule was not followed.

  • Corrupt Catalogue - An error message may appear on your FRx application. If this happens try exporting and re-importing data. This is also applicable to Great Plains Report Writer.

  • DrillDown Viewer - FRx is capable of drilling down information from a single summary report all the way to the transaction detail level. The problem happens after an upgrade. Make sure that when you do a drill down command that you are selecting XML DrillDown viewer. Otherwise, if you hit the old viewer version, an error message would appear.

With FRx, you can make proactive decisions and know where your company stands financially. You may have other tools to imitate the financial reporting of FRx, but we recommend sticking to this application because it improves efficiency in your operations and empowers each user with its customizable and accurate reporting capabilities.

Not Long Before We See Sleek And Light Gaming Laptops

Laptop computer shipments are estimated to be approaching 130million units this year, which is gigantic! In fact demand is so high that taiwanese manufactures are anticipating component shortages already. Many have predicted laptops to be trendy but its surprising that theres been no give. This is a trade that is searching to enchance on a number of things all in one go so new directions and excitement is created all the time.

More consumers are buying notebooks for gaming these days. Because of the increasing production and fast shifts it means expensive parts are lower in price than a couple of years ago. Gaming on notebooks is indeed a reality now with the breakthroughs in technology. Even more astonishing these days I think is how slick the cases are getting especially when you think about much speed is in them. Still there is a vast gap between the performance of notebooks and desktop pcs however desktop computers are more spacious to cater for improved cooling and airflow that all help. It looks as if everybody is possessed with designing thinner, lightweight notebooks and I’m sure we will see gaming notebooks like that in the near future.

Sometimes the standard mass market notebooks just are not suitable for what we require them for so custom laptops will forever be around. The benefit with a couple of custom notebooks is that you get good third party parts put in them. Defining what you require plainly is the main advantage. The systems found in retail outlets are typically configured based standard, mass market users and well not everybody is average now are they? You can get a more suitable notebook by buying it built to spec. You can a large number of manufacturers who supply direct so there are a lot of alternatives too. Big companies are in fact being ignored because of this.

I can’t wait to see what portables are introduced next. The super low cost umpc group looks to be starting all the buzz at the moment. This area is already facing tough competition and is becoming saturated. I think consumers would prefer to see larger notebooks that weigh a lot less than the current technology. Manufacturers must be laboring on a solution to this by now. I can expect its not too long before we start getting gaming notebooks that weigh nothing. Even though notebooks technology follows roadmaps there is forever going to be a gadget that changes all that.

Vodafone launches new daily service

A recent market revolution in the realm of mobile broadband, Vodafone recently launches a new $1 a day service package. Its new casual rate presents an appeal to much of market prospects. The inexpensive package rates, combined with Vodafone’s notorious reliability, propose a newly comprised eruption in the mobile broadband market.

Starting July 28, Vodafone will launch a service plan which is enormously convenient to all ranges of society’s market clusters. Consumers will have the chance to surf the net, download games and applications, and sustain their ability to access all sorts of popular media. The service incorporates 10MB of daily data usage in accordance with the plan, an adequate quantity for most casual mobile broadband consumers. Those who choose to exceed their usage limits will be charged $1 per each MB of overuse. Consumers who require an increase in usage allowance have the option to select a higher service plan, a suite more convenient to most technology enthusiasts.

Kutsten Shalfoon, the general manager of Vodafone’s service department, proposes a change in the method consumers utilize mobile internet. In harmony with increasing network capacity, new technological evolutions permit the incorporation of casual package rates.

Reding discussed this issue with the FT, including that she was fully prepared to allow an innovative shift in the pricing regime, consequence of the current compression of termination charges. This distortion of the telecoms division presents a challenge to the emergent market, a situation which requires immediate confrontation before it becomes more serious. A recent development, prior to her final decision, Reding forced mobile operators to terminate voice roaming charges. She also plans to get rid of data roaming charges, cutting the consumer usage prices drastically.

Though Reding’s proposal may be well intended, many critics believe her decision mat cause a hike in service charges. As the market develops, Reding believes it is necessary to change structural pricing throughout the networks. Operators welcome her innovative ideas, but are in complete opposition to her decisions. As the European commissioner, her duties are to regulate services. Rather than doing such, her decisions and forthcoming developments may cause a drastic revolution in the mobile market.
